Our Team
Prof. Liangfang Zhang received his Ph.D. in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. He was a postdoctoral associate in the laboratory of Prof. Robert Langer at MIT during 2006-2008.  He received his M.S. and B.E. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2002 and 2000, respectively. He joined UC San Diego as an Assistant Professor in July 2008 and was promoted to an Associate Professor with tenure in March 2012 and to Professor in July 2014.

Prof. Zhang has published 128 peer-reviewed articles and holds 43 issued/pending patents. He received the Victor K. LaMer Award from the American Chemistry Society in 2009, the Unilever Award from the American Chemistry Society in 2012, the MIT Technology Review’s TR35 Innovator Award in 2013, the Allan P. Colburn Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2014, and was elected to the Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering in 2015. Prof. Zhang was selected as one of The Brilliant 10 in all US science and engineering fields by the magazine Popular Science in 2016.

Dr. Jie Zhang received his B.S. from USTC in 1986, M.S. from Penn State in 1991, and Ph.D. from MIT in 1997. He previously worked for MIT, Shell, USGS, and Blackhawk Geometrics.  He is the founder of GeoTomo LLC in Houston, an oil and gas exploration company, and a co-founder of Miles Medical Technology Inc. in San Francisco and Beijing, a medical imaging company.

Dr. Zhang returned to academia in 2009, first teaching at MIT and then at Stanford, and joined USTC in China in 2011. He received Reginald Fessenden Award in 2012 and Outstanding Educator Award in 2015 both from the International Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). He was ranked No. 1 among 100 Most Creative People (MCP) in China in 2015 by the US magazine “Fast Company.”  Dr. Zhang has been serving in the MIT Visiting Committee since 2011, and became Executive Vice President of the International Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 2015.  He is a co-founder of Cello Therapeutics Inc.

Ms. Winnie Zhu received her BS in Chemistry in 1985 from Beijing Normal University, MS in Medicinal Chemistry in 1988 from Beijing Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and MChE (Master of Chemical Engineering) in 1992 from Johns Hopkins University, Whiting School of Engineering.

Ms. Winnie Zhu has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry including extensive expertise in parental drug manufacturing.  She joined Pfizer Inc. in 1992, where she played technical and managerial roles.  Her responsibilities included managing the Aseptic department production operation, personnel training and certification, production scale-up, issue production SOPs.  She was also in charge of new production line setup including new equipment customization and purchasing, production process validation, product quality related investigation and corresponding corrective action plans, etc.  In 2012, she was the President of Arytha Biosciences LLC, the parent company of Cello Therapeutics. In 2015, she became the President of Cellics Therapeutics, Inc., a sibling company of Cello Therapeutics, Inc.
  
Huiqing (Winnie) Zhu

Dr. Lili Xie received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She also received a M.S. in Mathematics and a M.S. in Economics from UIUC. Dr. Xie received her B.A. in International Finance from Peking University (PKU) in China.

Dr. Xie has been the Chief Financial Officer of Arytha Biosciences, LLC (the Holding Company) and the Chief Financial Officer of Cellics Therapeutics since their inception. Dr. Xie also served as Chief Financial Officer of Pharmaco-Kinesis Corporation, a clinical-stage biomedical device company, during 2011-2014. Dr. Xie has also been a professor teaching enterprise finance, MBA courses in international business and macroeconomics, and CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) courses and conducting research in small business finance, banking, and term structure of interest rates in business schools for 10 years. She also had a visiting stay in the Department of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and conducted research on macroeconomic policies, financial regulation, and stock earnings announcements.
